About the Engineer
Christopher Calihan
“From the young age of thirteen, I found my calling in the intricate world of sound and electronics at a small local repair shop. Under the guidance of the shop‘s owner, my curiosity blossomed into a lifelong passion, leading me to experiment with speakers, car stereos, and more. This early exposure laid the foundation for what would become a groundbreaking career in sound engineering. My journey took an exciting turn in the early 1990’s with the formation of No Limits, a collaborative venture in the vibrant Southern California car and boat audio scene. For nearly a decade, we pushed the boundaries of sound, fabricating custom enclosures, beta testing speakers, and competing nationally. These experiences not only honed my skills but also earned us accolades and recognition, solidifying our place in the audio world.
But my career has been about more than just competitions and technical prowess. Over the past thirty years, I’ve developed a unique philosophy that sets my work apart. I strive to create sound systems that are less intrusive and more harmonious with human hearing. My approach focuses on curating sound that is inviting for extended periods, a philosophy that began in car audio and seamlessly transferred to the professional audio and outdoor festival music scenes. One of my most notable contributions to the field is the co-development of the high excursion driver, or long throw woofer. Collaborating closely with manufacturers and engineers, my team and I played a pivotal role in creating and beta testing these drivers, leaving a lasting impact on sound reproduction technology.
At the core of my work is a simple yet profound philosophy: to spread love. I believe sound engineering is not just about technical excellence but also about creating emotional experiences that resonate with people. Looking forward, I aspire to raise the bar of sound reproduction, continuously exploring new ways to enhance the auditory experience and bring joy to listeners everywhere. As I reflect on my journey and look to the future, I remain committed to innovation, excellence, and most importantly, spreading love through the power of sound. “
